Can you believe summer is around the corner?...
This Weekend in Blythewood

Can you believe summer is around the corner?

Now you Know...There was a public swimming hole in Blythewood, with a bathhouse and pavilion for music and dancing back in the 30's and 40's.  It cost 15 cents to swim there!  Where was this first Blythewood public  swimming area?

Jessie W., from Bethel-Hanberry Elementary, was the first to answer! He knew the swimming hole was at Rimer Pond! We also had our great Town Hiistorian, Jim Mclean say he use to swim there!  I bet there are more great stories to be shared about the early days in Blythewood!  Thanks for anwering the question and for reading the newsletter!

Did you Know...Twelve students were in the first graduating class of Blythewood High School, finishing through the 12th grade.  What year was this first graduating class?

How could I forget..My father was a  1941 graduate of West Point. His class graduated early so they could be sent to the war and many of his classmates didn't make it back. I had the honor of escorting him to his 50th and 55th reunion at West Point before he passed on and was so amazed by the leadership and confidence of the cadets I met that week-end. (And you know we have a Blythwood son going to West Point after graduation!) I always remember my Dad and all our brave soldiers on Memorial Day, yet I didn't mention the special day in my last newsletter!  So, a belated Thanks to all our Service men and women out there! Thanks for your service to us and our great country!

Thanks to all the people who came to the Blythewood Beach Bash!  What fun was had by all!

Now you Know....Our Town was first known as Doko.  It changed to Blythewood in approxiamately 1877.  Why was the name changed and why did it change to Blythewood?  Chris C. was the first to know the answer!
Dr. Bookhart  wanted a new name for the female institute  and asked the faculty to submit suggestions. It was written that the woods here, filled with pines and oaks, were said to be "blythe and pretty". An entry was drawn out of a hat and became the new name for Blythewood.  "Blythe" was also thought to mean gay, so "a gay wood" was a second meaning to the new name of our town!
