The Weekend in Blythewood September 18th-20th

Blythefest, Hosted by Trinity United Methodist Church,  this Friday and Saturday !!

This Weekend in Blythewood
September 18th, 19th & 20th

To all our football teams and Cross country Track Winners!

Did you Know... As I watched the news the other night I reflected on how fortunate we are to live in Blythewood, USA.  But, as I have been reading the Blythewood timeline that was not always the case in our quaint little town of Blythewood. Just imagine... 1861 the Civil War begins in Charleston.  1865 thousands of people flee Columbia as Sherman advances on Columbia.  General Wade Hampton is in "Doko" as was General Blair from the Northern Army.  Blair burned Dr. S.W. Bookhart's plantation and ransacked James Bookart's house south of Langford Rd. The Army destroyed the railroad area and ransacked the Hoffman House    ( Town Hall). The faculty of the Female Institute put out fires of homes by Sandy Level.  What a different world and time.  To read more, go to www.blythewoodhistoricalsociety.org and click on research library/ timeline.

Wow!  We have some great high school athletes in our town!  Our football teams from both high schools won, the Lady Bengals volleyball team won, Westwood's Lady Redhawks won 3 sets, the Blythewood girls' golf team won, and the Westwood girls' tennis team shut out their opponents.  Way to go!

Did you Know...

The Blythewood Historical Society was formed in 2010.  The founded members included Frankie McLean, Margaret DuBard, Karen Kuehner, Kem Smith, Wade Dorsey, Bob Wood and Gayle Bell.
In 4 short years they have done so much to preserve the history of the town and should be congratulated.  There is a great website that features the Blythewood Timeline from the very start.  You will see many familiar names as you read about the founding families, stores, farming, schools, churches, the railroad, as well as the troops coming through Blythewood during the Civil War.  Type in Blythewood Timeline- Blythewood Historical Society and have fun reading about our historic town, thanks to the great work of many people at the Historical Society.

This Weekend in Blythewood
September 4th, 5th, & 6th

To all the ALS Ice Bucket Challengers who took the plunge!  Our Mayor was one!

Now you Know..The answer to last week's question ..The WPA project of 1938 built the gym in the Blythewood Academy which is still standing. The Historic Society has all the Blythe-Words Newsletters from as far back as the 1930's on their website, as well as copies at the  Langford-Nord House.  They are so interesting and tell such great stories of our town.  To see the archives go to www.historyofblythewood.com, then click Historical Documents,  School Papers, then pick a year of the Blythe-Words.

Did you Know...I have really enjoyed learning about Blythewood through the Historic Society's "Blythe-Words" documents on their website as listed above.

Instead of a question this week, I will just share what I read.  I learned that in the Blythewood High classes from 1964 and 1969 there were 3 Harvard graduates.  John Wilson graduated cum laude from Harvard.  Stanley Wilson went to Harvard and interned with U.S. Senator Ernest Hollings and Carl Muller won an academic scholarship to Harvard.  All big Blythewood names!  Plus these newsletters spoke of many other graduates and their accomplishments, names many of you would recognize.

Our Blythewood newspapers and Richland 2 do a great job highlighting the achievements of our citizens and students.  We had, and continue to have a wealth of talent in Blythewood!  MK

  Happy September!
