Now you Know...The answer to last week's question:  We have a "Self-Guided Walking Tour" guide of the historic places to see in Blythewood at Town Hall.  The Boney/Hykil house built in 1859 is now the Allstate Insurance building. It has served as a family home, a printing shop for the local poet J. Gordon Coogler, as well as a gift shop. Our new assistant superintendent from District 2, Keith Price, was the first to answer the question and is the recipient of a little treat from Town Hall.

Did you Know....Another historic spot in Blythewood is 110 McNulty Street. This house was built ca. 1905.  In 1911 Miss Frances A. Powell moved to Blythewood and boarded there, and later bought the house.  What was Miss Powell's occupation at that time?  What other businesses where in that historic house?

Email your answer to: kellym@townofblythewoodsc.gov and get a little treat for reading the newsletter and being so smart!

Now you Know...The answer to last week's question:  The first rodeo was in Blythewood in 1960 thanks to Jimmy and Sybil Jennings. "Uncle Jimmy" was the "Pied Piper of Blythewood" and "hung the moon" as stated in an article telling of his tragic death.  In 1964, Jimmy and Sybil traveled to Arkansas to buy horses. On their return trip on a small plane the gas gauge failed and the pilot tried to land on the highway near Stone Mountain, Georgia.  A tow truck saw the plane coming down and drove his truck across the highway to stop the traffic.  Unfortunately, the plane hit electrical wires and had a crash landing killing the Jennings. The community was devastated and so many families offered their help with the ranch and their 2 children, offering to take them into their homes.  To read the artical in the Columbia newspaper from 1964 go to the www.historyofblythewood.com website and click Historical Documents.  Then click news clippings and JJ Ranch Plane Crash. It is quite a story!

Now you Know...The answer to last week's question:  Marie and Willie McDonald moved to Blythewood in 1944 so their children could complete their education through  the 11th grade at Bethel School.  The McDonalds also housed many other children because they lived close to the school  at a time when no transportation was provided for these children.
Four Teachers also lived with the McDonald family at varies times! It takes a village!
Did you Know...The Doko Rodeo is coming to Blythewood next weekend!  Do you know when the first rodeo came to Blythewood?  There is quite a story about the owners of the ranch where  this first rodeo was held.  Do you know the name of this "Pied Piper of Blythewood"?
