Did You Know?....In 1995, Blythewood held its first Christmas parade.  It took all of ten minutes and consisted of fifteen  Blythewood community members, a mule pulling a gold cart, and a red truck This happy, thankful group went down Wilson Boulevard to the Post Office. Camp Discovery is hosting Giving Nature A try (GNAT) program for ages 3 to 6 on Friday, November 21. Parents and kids will have hands on activities, a nature walk, songs and stories as they learn about "A Long Winter's Nap". The Blythewood Area Ministers Association invites everyone to the annual Blythewood Community Thanksgiving Service for Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.  Trinity UMC will host this service and their new pastor, Rev. Nels Ledwell, will deliver the message. Westwood High Theatre Program will host a Winter Fine Arts Camp for ages 5-12 on Saturday, December 6th. from 9 to 12.  There will be lessons in dance, theatre, musical theatre and crafts.  The cost is $35 per child with a $5 discount for each sibling.  Bring a lunch and join in the fun.  For more information and to register before November 25, contact Dr. Anne Richardson at 691-4049 ext. 36703 or email her at arichard@richland2.org.    Blythewood High School will host a Fine Arts Festival Sunday, December 7 from 1 to 4 pm. Performance times start at 1:30 and are every half hour until 4.  The proceeds from the Fair will benefit Blythewood's winter service projects. It’s Christmas Parade Time! The Blythewood Chamber of Commerce is currently looking for volunteers to help organize and stage the 2014 Blythewood Christmas Parade.  If you would like to help,  email the Chamber office manager, Kitty Kelly at kitty@blythewoodchamber.com.  This year’s parade is Sunday, December 14, 2014 at 3:00 pm.  For those who would like to participate in or sponsor the parade, please check the Chamber website, www.blythewoodchamber.com, for the applicable forms. Richland County Transportation Penny Program Launches Logo, Brand and Website

Richland County Transportation Penny Program Launches Logo, Brand and Website

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. – The Transportation Penny program, today officially launched its website and brand identity, symbolized by a logo that highlights the significance of the penny to County residents. The launch of the logo, brand and website was developed in collaboration with County staff and the Transportation Penny program development team.

The logo features a 2012 penny, marking the year in which residents of Richland County passed the Special Sales and Use Tax. The program's brand, Richland Penny, is wrapped around the penny within a silver lining, which is synonymous with the County’s seal. The slogan for the Richland Penny program is Pennies Impacting People.  The penny will positively impact the community through job creation, economic development, quality of life, and connectivity to green spaces for County residents and visitors.

Richland Penny’s website, at www.richlandpenny.com, is designed to educate, inform and involve residents. Features include publicizing public meetings, updating project phases, as well as highlighting the benefits of the program and procurement opportunities. As part of its mission to provide transparency and accountability, the Richland Penny team will post project costs and progress reports to the site.

The Richland Penny team will work closely with the County’s Transportation Department staff to ensure timely delivery of projects with seamless transitions through each phase.   

“This is another step in the right direction in building this program from the ground up.  We look forward to utilizing this website throughout the life of the transportation program to provide accurate project information, small business opportunities, and program transparency to our citizens,” said Rob Perry, transportation director for Richland County. 

ICA Engineering, Brownstone and M.B. Kahn are the engineering and construction management firms spearheading the Richland Penny program team. They will be responsible for ranking projects, managing the program budget and overseeing every phase of each project until completion. Richland County Council approved a five-year contract with the program development team Oct. 28.

This Weekend in Blythewood November 13th, 14th & 15th Thanks to all our Blythewood Veterans!    Now You Know..The answer to last week's question was John Meade Hawley.  His daughter Elizabeth Hawley Gasque Van Exem was S.C.'s first US Congresswoman.  I have not heard this name in Blythewood  and wonder if there are still Hawleys here.  Let me know if you have any information on this family.  Sandra M. and John B. were first to answer the question and will receive a little treat from Town Hall.  Thanks for reading the newsletter!   Did You Know...There is a "1946-1970 and Forever", special edition Bethel-Hanberry High School Yearbook.  The B-HASS President, Larry Griffin, presented a copy to Town Hall as well as the Blythewood Historical Society.  It contains the history of the school with its many classes,  as well as a wonderful tribute to Mrs. Anne Eliza Garrick Hanberry and her staff.  You are welcome to come see it at Town Hall or go by the Historical Society on the corner of McNulty and Main Street.  Blythewood has a rich history with incredible people, many who are still here contributing to life in Blythewood!      Mark Your Calendar Muller Road Middle School will host its 2nd annual Fall Festival, Saturday, November 15, from 9 to 2 p.m.. The meeting will be held at The Manor at Doko Meadows starting at 6:00 PM. All businesses, organizations, or individuals with an interest in the sign ordinance or signage within the town are invited to attend this meeting. Park & Town Hall Paving on November 5-7

Sloan Construction will be paving the roadways and parking areas throughout Doko Meadows and around Blythewood Town Hall on November 5-7, pending weather conditions. Citizens using the park and The Manor at Doko Meadows and those visiting Town Hall should be aware that some portions of the roadways and parking areas will be unavailable for use during daylight hours. III, was the curator of Rare Books at Duke University and an expert on rare manuscripts and tablets.  He is fluent in many languages and is an expert translator. Can you guess what installation Mr. H. B. McLean, Mr. W.B Cooper, Mr. Walter Ballentine, Mr. E.S. Eargle and Mr. D.L. Branham supervised in 1948? In the Historical Society's papers, Blythe-Words, it was stated as "one of the greatest improvements that has come to Blythewood in many years". Do you recognize many of these names? They were instrumental in so many aspects of life in  the early days in Blythewood. CELEBRATING OLD-TIME BLYTHEWOOD: On Sunday, November 2, the Blythewood Historical Society will dedicate two historic structures that were relocated in April from Langford Road to the grounds of the Langford-Nord House for preservation purposes. The dedication ceremony begins at 3:00 PM at the Langford-Nord House, followed by live music and an ice cream social. The two historic structures—Mrs. Clara’s Sandwich Shop and Tom & Tallie Boney’s Dairy House—are included on the Town of Blythewood’s list of historic features and are symbolic of rural life in Blythewood in the early 20th century. The owners of these structures, Dorothy Martin Blume and Zelda Boney respectively, donated them to the Blythewood Historical Society for preservation. The structures will be open to the public during the Society’s regular hours: Thursday and Friday, noon to 4 PM, and Saturday, 9 AM to noon. The Christian Assistance Bridge Program is sponsoring a fundraiser dinner Thursday, November 6, at The Farm in Ridgeway. Sunday October 26th the Blythewood Bengals defeated The Carolina Hurricanes at Dutch Fork High School to claim their third consecutive SC Midlands Pop Warner Championship.  The Bengals are led by their head coach Rodney Singleton and Assistant Head Coach Carlton Edwards.  They will appear in the first round of the MidSouth Pop Warner Regional Playoffs in Raleigh on November 15th to face either the Capitol City Steelers or the Pender Hurricanes. The Blythewood Youth Football and Cheer Association is a non-profit affiliated with Pop Warner Little Scholars.  We serve approximately 160 to 180 boys and girls from the Blythewood, Ridgeway and surrounding communities.  To learn more about our program please visit www.blythewoodyouthfootball.com.
