Bugs! for ages 6-12.  Come join us as we learn about bugs and build a bug condo to take home.  Please register online at www.richlandlibrary.com/events or call 691-9806      Friday, May 15th from 5:30 until 8:00 Muller Midddle School will hold its first Mustang Mania Silent Auction at Doko Manor.  Auction items will include items from the S.C. State Museum, Riverbanks Zoo, NASCAR Hall of Fame and many others.  Come join in the fun with food from Scottie's and Rita's, music and  a photo booth! The fundraiser will help build a permanent concession stand at the school's football field. The Central Carolina FORCE AAU Basketball 9th grade team will host a Car Wash on Saturday, May 23 from 9:00 until 2:00 p.m. The Car Wash will be held at Walgreens located at 2725 Clemson Road.  The cost is $5 with donations welcomed.  The funds raised will be used to help support the team to attend the National Tournament in July.  For more information call 803-730-7717.  The Central Carolina Force is a 501(c)(3)  nonprofit AAU basketball organization founded in 2010 whose mission is to provide a positive structured environment for student-athlets and parents by teaching the importance of disciplice, academic achievement, good decision making, teamwork and respect. The Blythewood Farmers Market is opened every Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00.  Great produce, great fun! Blythewood After 5, sponsored by the Greater Blythewood Chamber of Commerce, will celebrate the grand opening of the new First Community Bank on Thursday, May 21 from 5:30 until 7 p.m. A ribbon cutting ceremony will start at 6 with refreshments catered by Eve's Southern Gourmet. Coming Soon....      The Blythewood Historical Society is planning two events for the 2015 Memorial Day weekend, May 24th and 25th.  There will be a Veteran's Day rememberance and flag retirement ceremony Sunday, May 24th at the Langford-Nord House on the corner of McNulty and Main Street in Blythewood.  The program willl start at 3:30 with a patriotic ceremony saluting all veterans, living and deceased. There wil be a  public recognition of veterans by branch of service, a few brief words and then the flag retirement ceremony led by the local Boy Scouts.  Those wishing to retire and properly dispose of their old flags may drop them off at Town Hall  (M-F, from 8-5)  or bring them to the ceremony. The ceremony will end with Taps and light refreshments.      The Society will also launch its "Help Us Raise Our Flag" campaign to fund a lighted flag pole and flags that will eventually serve as the focal point for a larger memorial on the grounds of the Langford-Nord House.  Donations to the memorial in honor or in memory of a loved one will be accepted and acknowledged by the Society.      A Memorial Day BBQ Sale will be held Monday, May 25th between 7 a.m. and noon.The  BBQ sale, by Blythewood's best barbecue masters, include pork butts, shredded pork and hash and  must be pre-ordered and prepaid by May 18th. The Blythewood High School swim team will host a Flapjack Fundraiser on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Funds raised by the swimmers will be used to help support the swim program.

Happenings at the Blythewood Arts Center... Thursday, April 30, 4:30-6:30 Book signing of Poems by Arthur Turfa, Blythewood High School Teacher Oil Painting Classes with Rita Smith.  The class meets for 6 weeks on Tuesdays, 1:00-3:00 p.m. The cost is $135 for the 6 weeks. Go to www.relayforlife.org/blythewoodsc to sign up for a team. Now You Know... Mr.Jim Brown had another job around 1918 which was to drive Dr. Michael Langford on house calls in "the Brush". The "Brush" was Blythewood's first automobile, owned by Dr. Langford. According to the Blythewood Scrapbook and an article in the State newspaper in 1976,  Bill McDonald reported that the "Brush" was about half the cost of a Ford, selling for $485, with great gas mileage. According to  Mr. Jim, Dr. Langford often fell asleep exhausted from the many house calls.  Do you Know....Around 1918, Dr. Langford finally received some help by giving many of his patients to Dr. Portia Lubchencos. (Portia and her husband, Alexis, made a harrowing trip to Blythewood from Russia as I reported months ago.) Dr. Portia made house calls in a horse and carriage and recounted that she easily delivered a hundred home-born babies each year. She had 5 children of her own and in 1930 moved to Colorado as times were hard in the south. The kids will get wet and dirty in the creek as they investigate the critters that live there.  Wear closed-toed (old) shoes ( no sandals). The cost is $10 per child, $20 family maximum.  Register by email to sara@scwf.org or call 803-609-4778.

Now you Know...Mr. Jim Brown had several jobs as a young man... a truck driver, farrmer and then he helped pave highway 21 which was one of the first roads paved between Columbia and Blythewood.  It was done in the year 1921 and therefore earned its name, Highway 21. This is also why I love my job.  This is the best answer in the history of the world /or maybe just the newsletter and actually (partly) correct!  What a creative employee we have at the Blythewood library! Lori may need a raise or be adviced to write a best seller of bizarre answers for any and all occassions. Lori gets the prize for this great answer: Because it was started in 1921?  Because it was 21 miles from the starting point to Columbia? All the crew members had birthdays on the 21st?  Jim Brown was the foreman and he had 21 kids?  They paved it with 21 ingredients in the tar?  Highways 20 and 22 were already taken?  They ate nothing but grits for 21 days while working on the project?  There were 21 mule farms along the route?  Obviously, I have no idea but would love to know the answer!   I can only imagine what her answer will be for the next question!
